Hayter Motif 48

Hayter Motif 48 petrol lawnmower

Hayter Motif 48 petrol lawnmower

PRO’s: excellent cut on normal lawns, 8 cutting heights

CON’s: no rear roller

VERDICT: an excellent alternative to the more expensive models

OUR RATING ★★★★☆

The Hayter Motif 48 is the middle-sized machine in the Motif range of four wheel petrol push mowers but all three sizes are also available as self-propelled Autodrive versions.  However, there’s no rear roller option so if you’re after stripes on your lawn then you’ll need to look at the Hayter Spirit family of mowers.

The Hayter Motif 48 is a smart looking petrol lawn mower which has an offset steel cutting deck to allow it to cut up the edges of your lawn and is designed for medium to large gardens.

On top of the deck sits a powerful 190 cc Briggs and Stratton 650 petrol engine.  This is a four stroke engine so needs to be filled with oil when it first arrives.  We found this a little tricky as the dipstick wasn’t very easy to use but thankfully it’s only something that needs to be done once.

Sitting behind the 48 cm (19 inch) cutting deck below the handles is the fabric grass bag.  It has a capacity of 59 litres but we found that we could never quite get it to fully fill as it’s at quite a steep angle from the cutting deck.  That said 59 litres even not quite filled is plenty big enough and it was easy to empty out.  The fact that it’s narrow enough to fit between the handles makes lifting it much easier too.

Like most petrol lawn mowers, the handles fold for storage when not in use.  When in use, we found them to be comfortable and there’s a good range of height adjustment too so different members of the same family could happily use the Hayter Motif 48.

So what’s the Hayter Motif 48 like to use ?

One or two pulls on the starting cord is all it needs to get started.  Being a push mower, it won’t pull itself along but the large wheels and smooth bearings made it easy to push along the lawn.  At 32 kg it sits in the middle weight-wise and only makes its weight noticeable when pushing it up slopes.  If your garden has slopes in it then it might be worth considering the Hayter Motif 48 Autodrive model.

The Hayter Motif 48 certainly has plenty of power in the Briggs and Stratton engine – it coped brilliantly with long wet grass with just very occasional clumping in the chute to the grass bag and it seemed fairly economical as we didn’t have to top up the 1 litre fuel tank as often as we thought.

The cutting height is adjusted using a single lever which provides eight distinct cutting heights between 25 mm and 55 mm.  The lowest cutting height is actually higher than some other mowers but, since it lacks a rear roller, this isn’t really designed for super smooth ornamental lawns where a stripe is needed.  Instead, it excels on what we would consider to be normal lawns complete with lumps and bumps but if you’ve got a paddock or an orchard then this’ll cope brilliantly with those too leaving an excellent finish and no dropped cuttings.

Overall the Hayter Motif 48 is is an excellent petrol lawn mower and we’ve hesitation in recommending it.  Our only concern would be if your garden has lots of slopes in it – if it does then go for the slightly more expensive Autodrive version.
