OUR RATING ★★★★★

The Honda Izy HRG415PD is a 41 cm (16″) cut petrol lawnmower designed for small to medium sized gardens up to the size of a tennis court. It features a body and cutting deck made of steel finished off in a durable silver colour powder coated finish. Some of its competitors such as the Hayter Spirit 41 use aluminium to save weight but through careful design Honda have managed to keep the weight down to manageable levels. With an all up weight of 28 kg the Honda Izy HRG415PD is easy to manoever.

Even on a lawn with lots of slopes we found that the four wheel version was easy to push around. This is due in part to the large wheels which don’t drop into small holes and depressions as much as smaller wheels do so more of your energy is used to move it along rather than push it up and out of depressions. The wheels are also slightly inset of the cutting width which makes lining up with your previous cut a breeze. It also allows you to cut close to trees and the lawn edge without a wheel falling into the flower bed.

The Honda Izy HRG415PD is powered by Honda’s GCV135 4-stroke engine 4.5 HP engine with an automatic choke. Unlike some other petrol lawnmowers there’s no need to prime this one. To start it you simply hold the safety handle and pull the starter cord which is located halfway up the handle. Ours started first time, everytime even when cold – very impressive.

In use, the Honda Izy HRG415PD cuts the grass superbly and left a nice stripe on the lawn thanks to the rubber flap fitted at the back. Cutting height adjustment is easy to do with a range of 6 cutting heights between 20 mm and 74 mm adjusted by two sturdy levers located at the front and rear of the cutting deck. We had no problems with grass pick up even on wet grass. This is due in part to the power of the motor. Many manufacturers fit 4 HP engines to petrol lawnmowers of this size. The fact that Honda use the same 4.5 HP engine in their larger models shows that it’s got plenty of power in reserve.

The grass bag looks small but holds a deceptively large 50 litres of grass cuttings. It can be tempting to choose a lawn mower with a larger grass bag but it’s less tiring to empty the bag a few times than to expend extra energy pushing your grass cuttings around the garden ! Honda say that the grass bag has been redesigned in order to improve the pickup of the grass cuttings.

The Honda range of petrol lawnmowers are more expensive than their competitors but if you want the best then you can’t go far wrong with one of these. Throw in a 3 year warranty and they are hard to beat.
