Husqvarna R53SV petrol lawnmower

PRO‘s: Excellent Honda engine, variable speed drive system

CON‘s: Some concerns over fragility of plastic wheels. Lowest cutting height not that low

VERDICT: If you’re looking for a low cutting height look elsewhere otherwise well worth a look

OUR RATING ★★★★☆

The Husqvarna R53SV self-propelled 53 cm / 21 inch rotary petrol lawn mower is the smallest of the R family of mowers that Husqvarna make and is designed for large lawns with its large 75 litre grass box. It may be the baby of the family but has it got what it takes ?

Now the name Husqvarna may be more familiar to you if you own a chainsaw, trimmer or a ride-on tractor but the Swedish company also make lawn mowers under their own name as well as the brand names McCulloch and Gardena.

The Husqvarna R53SV is the smallest of the R family of petrol lawnmowers and like all of the R-family mowers has a four stroke Honda engine, in this case a 163 cc Honda GCV160 engine with a manual choke.

This is a definite plus as some of the other models have engines from Briggs and Stratton. Now we’ve nothing against Briggs and Stratton engines but in our opinion the Honda engines are better.

As is normal in this design of rotary petrol lawn mower, sitting below the engine is a one piece cutting deck made of steel. As it’s made of steel it does make for a heavier mower (the Husqvarna R53SV weighs 40 kg) compared to those with aluminium cutting decks (which weigh typically around 35 kg) but as it’s a self-propelled mower the weight isn’t that noticeable unless you’ve got to carry it up steps to an area of lawn.

Talking of the drive system, unlike many of its competitors who simply have one speed, the Husqvarna R53SV has variable speed front wheel drive so that you can match its speed to the conditions.

The handle has two height positions and folds for easy storage and carrying. It’s also more comfortable than some others that we’ve tested.

The cutting height can be varied between 30 mm and 80 mm not by adjusting a single lever but by adjusting each of the wheels. This is much more fiddly than simply adjusting the front wheels through the use of a single lever although it does, in theory, give you much more adjustability. It’s just that we couldn’t see any difference when we’d finished cutting the lawn.

So how does it cut ?

Very well is the answer although the lowest cutting height of 30 mm will not suit fine lawns. When cutting you have three choices: to collect the cuttings, the mulch them or to discharge them to the side for later collection. Unusually there’s no option for rear discharge although it’s not really a problem as it makes more sense to discharge the grass cuttings to the side rather than fire them all over your feet.

The large rear wheels give excellent maneuverability although they look rather flimsy as they are made of plastic and there have been reports on the internet of the wheels falling apart after a few years hard use. That said, the mower does have a two year warranty so if you have any issues with the wheels your dealer should be able to sort them out for you.

Although we’re got some potential concerns over the possible fragility of the wheels, we’d recommend the Husqvarna R53SV petrol lawnmower on the basis of its two year warranty. You get the excellent Honda engine, it cuts well and the price is comparable to those of it’s competitors. But if you have hanker after a fine finish you may be better off with a mower offering a lower cutting height.
