Mountfield HP46R petrol roller lawnmower

Mountfield HP46R petrol roller lawnmower

PRO’s: Cut well and left a lovely stripe on the lawn

CON’s: Slightly heavier than some but not noticeably so

VERDICT: Good quality cut, good warranty, recommended!

OUR RATING ★★★★☆

The Mountfield HP46R petrol lawnmower has a 46 cm (18″) cut and is designed for medium to large gardens. It includes a large diameter rear roller to leave a classic stripe.

Initial assembly took around 20 minutes thanks to the clear instructions and we particularly liked the folding handle which allows the mower to pack down into a reasonable compact package for storage. It’s also worth noting that the handle is height adjustable so that you can get the right position.

This is important as this push mower is heavier than some, weighing in at around 30 kg. Unlike some of its competitors it’s not self propelled which means that you’re responsible for moving it around the lawn. Whilst it never felt particularly heavy, it just didn’t feel as light as some other similarly sized mowers that we’ve tested.

Once filled with oil (like all petrol lawnmowers this is an essential first step) which was slightly fiddly due to the location of the separate oil tank, it started first time and every time after we stopped to empty the grass bag (there’s a safety cut out on this like on so many other models these days).

This mower has a slightly larger fuel tank than normal (1 litre versus 0.9 litre) and seemed slightly more economical than others that we’ve tested although this may be simply down to the slightly smaller engine (100 cc compared to 150 cc) using less fuel.

Although some Mountfield mowers are powered by Honda petrol engines, the Mountfield HP46R is powered by Mountfields own 100 cc engine with a manual choke.

That said, the fact that the engine is smaller than average didn’t seem to affect the cutting performance nor the ability of the Mountfield HP46R to collect the grass cuttings. Far from it, the 55 litre fabric grass box swallowed everything that was thrown at it and even includes an innovative indicator to let you know that it’s full which worked well.

The cutting height is adjusted using a single lever and gives a range of cutting heights between 20 mm and 70 mm in five steps.

We were pleasantly surprised by the finish that the Mountfield HP64R produced, it cut rough and long grass with ease without any blocking and the underside of the cutting deck was fairly clean after with no grass pulp scattered about – which is a sign of good airflow under the cutting deck and into the grass bag And the rear roller left a nicely defined strip which lasted.

Throw in a three year warranty and this is an excellent petrol lawnmower for medium to large gardens. Highly recommended !
