PRO‘s: Well built, good finish, for the price it’s hard to beat

VERDICT: If you need a large mower and have a limited budget this is the one to get

OUR RATING ★★★★☆

Leominster-based Rhyas source their 22″ self-propelled GT22SP petrol mower from China and it’s mainly sold online on Amazon and eBay. Buying a mower online without access to a dealer network may appear risky to some people when you might have to pay to return an extremely heavy item to the distributor for warranty work so is it something you should consider ?

On paper the Rhyas GT22SP certainly ticks all the right boxes. It has a 6 HP 4-stroke engine, an all steel cutting deck and is self-propelled so that it can tackle the largest of gardens. In fact, with it’s 56 cm (22 inch) cutting width that’s exactly what it’s aimed at.

It arrived in a very large, heavy box pretty much fully assembled. Within 20 minutes we’d fitted the rear wheels, raised and tightened the bolts holding the handle in place, unfolded the handle (it folds for storage), removed the mulching plug (otherwise it won’t collect the grass) and fitted the grass bag to the metal frame. Adding oil and petrol took a few more minutes and then we were ready to cut the grass.

First impressions were good – the Rhyas GT22SP started first time we pulled the cord (there is a more expensive electric start version as well) and tackled everything that we threw at it. It has seven cutting heights ranging between 15 mm and 75 mm and these were easy to change. It tackled the longest grass we could find thanks to the power and torque of the motor.

We weren’t expecting much of a finish from this mower but we were very pleasantly surprised. Whilst the finish isn’t as good as one of the top of the range Hondas it costs less than half as much yet still gets pretty close.

If you like a stripe on your lawn then this would be a good choice. Thanks to a combination of its weight – 35 kg – and the fitted rubber flap at the rear of the mower it left a reasonable stripe which lasted for quite some time. Thankfully the weight isn’t that noticeable when you’re using the mower as the self-propulsion system pulls it along nicely and the large rear wheels made it easy to manoeuvre.

The Rhyas GT22SP collects cuttings in the 60 litre grass bag. We feel that this is just a little small for a large garden. Instead we would prefer a slightly larger bag, at least 70 litres in size would have been ideal. We were pleased to see that the grass bag was easy to empty.

If you don’t want to collect the cuttings they can be mulched by fitting the supplied mulching plug or discharged to the rear or side of the mower.

When your lawn is cut the Rhyas GT22SP is easy to clean thanks to the inclusion of it’s easy clean adaptor which allows a hose to be connected to the cutting deck. With the engine running this throws water around the underside of the cutting deck and washes out almost all of the grass cuttings.

So, returning to our original question: should you buy a mower mail order where there isn’t a dealer network in place ? If you buy a Honda mower mail order you should be able to take it to any Honda dealer should there be a warranty issue. The problem with the Rhyas GT22SP (and it’s the only problem) is that if it breaks down you’ll need to send it back to the supplier and, due to it’s weight, this would cost around £50.

We’ve not had it on test long enough to know if there will be any long term problems so all we can say is that we didn’t experience any problems with our one and it seems well built and durable so should provide many years of service.

So would we buy one ? Yes, if we needed a mower this size and funds wouldn’t stretch to a Honda or similar then we’d take the chance as the Rhyas GT22SP costs less than half the price of a comparable Honda mower and cuts nearly as well.

Highly recommended
